Laphroaig is één van de negen distilleries op Islay en werd opgericht in 1815 door de Alexander en Donald Johnston. Waarschijnlijk werd er al eerder gestookt, twee stukken grond ter plaatse werden al in 1776 aan de Johnstons verhuurd. De combinatie boerderij-stokerij kwam veel voor, de pacht werd ook wel in vloeibare vorm betaald. Voor een uitgebreid verslag van de historie van Laphroaig is het boek The Legend of Laphroaig (Van Gils en Offringa, Engelstalig) absoluut een aanrader. De virtuele distillery tour met distillery manager John Campbell geeft een goed beeld hoe Laphroaig whisky maakt.

Laphroaig is one of the nine distilleries on Islay, founded in 1815 by Alexander and Donald Johnston. It’s likely distilling started earlier, two areas on the spot were leased to the Johnstons in 1776. The combination of a farm with a distillery was common those days, as was paying part of the lease in liquid form. For a thorough and enjoyable report on the history of Laphroaig the book The Legend of Laphroaig (Van Gils and Offringa, written in English) is very recommendable. The virtual distillery tour with distillery manager John Campbell gives good insight in how whisky is produced by Laphroaig.
